WSJS Episode #127 - Too Many Colas

Grammy Controversy

The 2022 Grammy Nominations are in & like every other year, people are pissed! Multiple controversial figures have received nominations this year including, Dave Chapelle, Louis CK, Marylin Manson & DaBaby. CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr stated that they would not be restricting artists from submitting their work for consideration. Some of these artists may not be welcome at the event themselves, but they clearly made it through the selection process. I think that this is actually a good thing for the Grammys. To me it shows that maybe the process is more democratic than we all originally thought. This is a sticky situation because I am not going to die on the hill of defend some of these guys actions because I don’t believe that they should be defended but it does add a new layer to the age old question - Can you enjoy somebody’s art if you don’t like the artist? I’m not going to wander that right because I think it depends, I have no attachment to DaBaby but I really enjoyed the first few albums in Marylin Manson’s discography.  I know people are not going to like this sentiment but I think this may be a healthy thing for society. We don’t need to shut everybody out for eternity.

WSJS Episode #126 - Honking w/ Lost in Japan

Family Reunion

On Friday November 19th Lost in Japan headlined Rum Runners in London Ontario Canada for their ‘Red Line’ Release Show. This was not the triumphant return for music venues but it did genuinely feel like a return for the music scene here in London. Over 300 people poured into the upstairs of London Music Hall to watch 4 incredible indie bands play for the first time in 18 months. A year and a half of wondering if people would show up, if live music would ever be the same. Looking back it is insane to think that was a point of anxiety. It was a true reunion, I saw people I hadn’t seen in over a year, friends & old professors that I would see on a regular business in that very room. We all took for granted the purity of those moments, the excitement of seeing your friends succeed on that stage. Live music is back, the crowds are back. There is a lot of love left in this world, step away from your screen and go watch your favourite band play.

WSJS Episode #125 - Who Are You? ft. Sarina Haggarty

Taylor Swift Game Changer

In 2019 Taylor Swift announced that per the clause in her Big Machine contract she was able to begin the re-recording process on her first 5 albums. Why would Taylor want to re-record all of her music? Taylor’s fight for her masters has long been public knowledge. The original recordings have been sold twice without her knowledge & she was never even given the opportunity to buy them back. Before Taylor signed her newest deal with Universal Music Group (and Republic Records) where she was permitted to own the masters to all future works. Now I wanted to point out the scummiest thing about Big Machine’s attempt to keep Taylor Swift on their label. Big Machine offered Taylor the opportunity to receive her original masters back. For every new album Taylor turned in she would receive one album back. Obviously this ludicrous deal made the decision for Taylor to move on to UMG.

Although Taylor is on track to own all of her music by essentially making all of her original recording obsolete, UMG have started to rework artist agreements. Past agreements allowed artists to re-record old music five years after their last delivered recording or two years after the end of their contract term. Taylor has set a new precedent for artists for the better & for the worst. Artists like Olivia Rodrigo were able to keep ownership of her masters but most new artists will not be afforded this opportunity. Most people do not have the celebrity before they sign a record contract, as much we like to hate on record labels, they are making an investment in talent. The risk grows that much bigger if they less outlets to make their money back. In saying all that, pay attention to what you are signing & really thing about what you are potentially giving away, and don’t give them a single sliver of your touring.

DJ Khalid is the Funniest Man on Earth

The most sincere guitar demo that has ever been recorded is shockingly starring the originator of THE BEST MUSIC - DJ Khaled. It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Rock Music. I don’t really pay too close attention to what goes on in the world of “Popular Music.” I especially don’t pay attention to what Mr. DJ Khaled is doing. That is until now. DJ Khaled has very quickly become one of my favourite people on the entire planet. DJ Khaled trying to play the guitar might possibly be the greatest video on the internet.

Here’s why I don’t think it’s a joke. There is no way that any sane person would accept a gift & then make an absolute mockery of that gift in front of the entire world. Here’s the other thing, DJ Khaled plays this guitar like a child. I genuinely can not wrap my head around how DJ Khaled has been in the music industry for almost 25 years and you’re telling me he hasn’t seen enough people play guitar to fake his way through this video. He didn’t even play a poor rendition of Buffalo Soldier. How is DJ Khaled such a big fan of Bob Marley publicly, that the Marley family themselves sent him a brand new Guitar as a GIFT and this guy can’t even play I Shot the Sheriff. To wrap this up, DJ Khaled never stops because he truly is the best music.

WSJS Episode #122 - DIME is Regular Ugly

This was probably my favourite episode that we have done in a long time. I know the essence of We Should Jam Sometime is to have a underground perspective on the mainstream but Episode #122 is true insight in the commradery in the music scene. All of us (minus Craig) met at Fanshawe in the Music Industry Arts program. We came up through the London Scene together, have succeeded & failed together. Through enduring endlessly loud practices in each others houses over the years we have bond unlike I have ever experienced before. This one gets a little chaotic so I hope you enjoy the ride.

WSJS Episode #121 - Hey Sport

The Cry of the Juggalo

What may go down as the most devastating retirement in all of music, Violent J of Insane Clown Posse fame has announced the rap duo will stop regular touring next year. Mr. J announced in a press release that he his suffering from a heart condition that makes preforming difficult. Though it is not all bad news for your local Juggalos, ICP will still be releasing music along with performances at Juggalo events. I truly urge you to read the statement Violent released because it unintentionally hilarious for such a serious matter.

Super Delux-o Albums

I used to love deluxe releases of albums but now I really just start to wonder why. On this weeks episode we talked about how the Beatles released a 57 song, nearly 3 hour long version of their 1970 album “Let it Be.” There are literally random takes of songs on this album & I just don’t know who this is for. It has been well documented that my High School Music teacher Mr. Delaney ruined any chance I had of being a Beatles fan but I still believe this is truly overkill. I hit my Nirvana phase right around the 20th anniversary of Nevermind & the release of the Kurt Cobain Documentary “Montage of Heck” which included and insane amount of found recordings of Kurt Cobain. The equivalent of throwing my voice notes on streaming services…. you know provided I hit it big & parish far too soon from this world. Though this Beatles example may not be as intrusive as the Nirvana example is but equally as ridiculous.

WSJS Ep. #120 - Just Less Scary

R Kelly Streaming Numbers Increase

So are we all just curiosity streaming R Kelly? Since the airing of Surviving R Kelly, the Singer’s streaming numbers have increased 14% for on demand services & 55% on Radio Play. Don’t get me wrong we almost did it in this episode but can we all just agree that we do not need to hear Ignition anymore?

Can You Smell What The Rock is Spitting?

Dwanye “The Rock” Johnson may be the most beloved man on planet Earth but we may have found a weakness in The Great Ones arsenal. The Brahma Bull (yeah I watch wrestling) was featured on Tech N9ne’s newest release “Face Off” which was ultimate just a commercial for Rock’s Teremana Tequila. I think Craig said it best - “He’s still scary, just less scary now”
